The Science of the Dogon: Decoding the African Mystery Tradition Laird Scranton A look at the close resemblance between the creation and structure of matter in both Dogon mythology and modern science
• Reveals striking similarities between Dogon symbols and those used in both the Egyptian and Hebrew religions
• Demonstrates the parallels between Dogon mythical narratives and scientific concepts from atomic theory to quantum theory and string theory
The Dogon people of Mali, West Africa, are famous for their unique art and advanced cosmology. The Dogon’s creation story describes how the one true god, Amma, created all the matter of the universe. Interestingly, the myths that depict his creative efforts bear a striking resemblance to the modern scientific definitions of matter, beginning with the atom and continuing all the way to the vibrating threads of string theory. Furthermore, many of the Dogon words, symbols, and rituals used to describe the structure of matter are quite similar to those found in the myths of ancient Egypt and in the daily rituals of Judaism. For example, the modern scientific depiction of the informed universe as a black hole is identical to Amma’s Egg of the Dogon and the Egyptian Benben Stone.
The Science of the Dogon offers a case-by-case comparison of Dogon descriptions and drawings to corresponding scientific definitions and diagrams from authors like Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene, then extends this analysis to the counterparts of these symbols in both the ancient Egyptian and Hebrew religions. What is ultimately revealed is the scientific basis for the language of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, which was deliberately encoded to prevent the knowledge of these concepts from falling into the hands of all but the highest members of the Egyptian priesthood. The Science of the Dogon also offers compelling new interpretations for many of the most familiar Egyptian symbols, such as the pyramid and the scarab, and presents new explanations for the origins of religiously charged words such as Jehovah and Satan.

A Democracy of Chameleons: Politics and Culture in the New Malawi (Kachere Books) After thirty years of autocratic rule under "Life President" Kamuzu Banda, Malawians experienced a transition to multi-party democracy in 1994. A new constitution and several democratic institutions promised a new dawn in a country ravaged by poverty and injustice. This book presents original research on the economic, social, political and cultural consequences of the new era. A new generation of scholars, most of them from Malawi, cover virtually every issue causing debate in the New Malawi: poverty and hunger, the plight of civil servants, the role of the judiciary, political intolerance and hate speech, popular music as a form of protest, clergy activism, voluntary associations and ethnic revival, responses to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and controversies over women’s rights. Both chameleon-like leaders and the donors of Malawi’s foreign aid come under critical scrutiny for supporting superficial democratization. The book ends with a rare public statement on the New Malawi by Jack Mapanje, Malawi’s internationally acclaimed writer. |

Historical Dictionary of Malawi (Historical Dictionaries of Africa) Owen J. M. Kalinga, Cynthia A. Crosby This third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi is a greatly expanded and updated version of early ones. Containing over 1000 entries, it is the most extensive single-volume reference book on Malawi covering a broad range of fields, including war, disease, the rise and fall of state systems, religious socio-political movements, natural sciences, the environment, transport and the economy. The Dictionary charts developments from prehistory to post-Banda Malawi, from Tom Bokwito to James Sangala, and the UMCA Mission at Magomero to the general elections of 1999, paying particular attention to individuals, groups and forces that have molded this Southern African country.
The book is user-friendly: it has a chronology section containing important dates and events; all entries are in alphabetical order; it also has a long informative bibliographical section, organized according to subjects such as biography, culture, the economy, gender, government, history, law, literature, and medicine and science. The last part of the bibliography is a list of current and obsolete newspapers and periodicals relating to Malawi.
The dictionary answers the need for a comprehensive reference book on Malawi. It is detailed and wide-ranging in its coverage of subjects, and should be an essential companion for students, teachers, scholars and general readers interested in learning and understanding more about the past and present of the Lake Malawi region. |
