It is also Yom
Kippur, and the Israeli Defense Force is preparing to observe the holiest of the Jewish holy days.

Meanwhile the Syrian army, the greatest achievement of the modern Syrian state, is
massed on the Golan Heights. Together with newly arrived Soviet-made equipment,
1,200 main battle tanks, 1,000 armored personnel carriers, 1,000 artillery pieces, and
more than 100 mobile antiaircraft missile carriers are ready to strike in a lightning-swift
offensive that will drive to the sea and cut Israel in two.

Duel for the Golan, the first book to be written on this aspect of the Yom Kippur War, is
based on interviews with the participants from both sides of the fighting. As such it
remain a compelling and powerful account of one of the greatest tank battles fought
since World War II. It also provides the first in-depth analysis of exactly how and why an
inferior number of Israeli defenders was capable of inflicting one of the greatest defeats
in modern military history upon awe-inspiring Arab armored forces.

Here are the intimate details of tank-against-tank fighting, whether it be during retreats,
in ambushes, or on the attack. Here are the stories of incredible courage and individual
initiative as the Israeli defenders strive to contain the unexpected Syrian assault. During
the 100-hour battle that saved Israel, every Israeli tank that was committed to the Golan
fighting was hit by hostile fire at least once, and some commanders had five or six tanks
shot out from under them.

By the end of the war only a few days later, Israeli forces had counterattacked and
advanced to where their artillery could hit the Damascus International Airport and other
strategic targets with pinpoint accuracy. The Syrian army was virtually destroyed in the
field, as were contingents from other Arab states such as Iraq and Jordan. How these remarkable turns of battle occurred is deftly laid out. This revealing account of a battle
that changed the history of the Middle East is especially relevant today as tensions in the
region increase once again.

Travels in Syria and the Holy Land (Cambridge Library Collection - Travel and Exploration)

John Lewis Burckhardt

John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817) was a Swiss explorer who is best remembered for his rediscovery of the ancient city of Petra in modern Jordan. In preparation for this journey, for which he needed to pass as a Muslim, Burckhardt spent two years exploring and studying Arabic and Islamic law in Aleppo, before travelling widely in Arabia and Egypt. This book provides 'a view of Arabian life and manners in every degree, from the Bedouin camp to the populous city', but the most striking passages describe the ruins of Petra, and especially its sumptuously carved Nabataean tombs. Within that narrative are a number of sensitive issues, including sectarian strife between the majority Sunni population and the Alawites, not to mention Christians.

People may know what’s going on in Syria today, but how did Syria get to where it is today, at the forefront of the Arab Spring? The history of Syria in the last century is one of turbulence, violence, and political intrigue, with local religious sects battling for control of the land while foreign powers vied to maintain influence over the region. What resulted was a toxic and twisted mess that has precipitously affected the entire region, from Israel and Lebanon to Iran and Iraq.

The History of Syria: 1900-2012 comprehensively and descriptively unweaves the web, progressing through the history of Syria from the days of the Ottoman Empire to now, by examining all of the different religious, political, foreign, and military issues that affect Syria and are affected by Syria today. Focusing on the similarities and the differences in skills between former dictator Hafez al-Assad and his successor son, Bashar, Ajami explains how an irresistible force clashed with an immovable object: the regime versus people who conquered fear to challenge a despot of unspeakable cruelty. Although the people at first hoped that Bashar would open up the prison that Syria had become under his father, it was not to be—and rebellion soon followed.

Offering a detailed historical perspective, Ajami shows how, for four long decades, the Assad dynasty, the intelligence barons, and the brigade commanders had grown accustomed to a culture of quiescence and silence. But Syrians did not want to be ruled by Bashar's children the way they had been ruled by Bashar and their parents had been by Bashar's father. When the political hurricane known as the Arab Spring hit the region, Bashar al-Assad proclaimed his country's immunity to the troubles. He was wrong. An offshoot of the Ismaili Shi'ite sect of Islam, the Assassins were the first group to make systematic use of murder as a political weapon. Established in Iran and Syria in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, they aimed to overthrow the existing Sunni order in Islam and replace it with their own. They terrorized their foes with a series of dramatic murders of Islamic leaders, as well as of some of the Crusaders, who brought their name and fame back to Europe.Professor Lewis traces the history of this radical group, studying its teachings and its influence on Muslim thought. Particularly insightful in light of the rise of the terrorist attacks in the U.S. and in Israel, this account of the Assassins--whose name is now synonymous with politically motivated murderers--places recent events in historical perspective and sheds new light on the fanatic mind.

Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade

James Reston Jr.

The epic story of the battle for the Holy Land and the two larger-than-life figures at its center.

James Reston, Jr., the author of Galileo: A Life (called "masterful" and "brilliant" by the Washington Post) and the critically lauded The Last Apocalypse, a stunningly original portrait of the Christian world at the turn of first millennium, now re-creates the collision of the Christian holy wars and the Muslim jihad at the end of the twelfth century. Reston's compelling portrait of Saladin brings to life the wise, highly cultured leader who realized an enduring Arab dream by uniting Egypt and Syria and whose conquest of Jerusalem not only sparked the Third Crusade but ignited the first jihad and turned Saladin into a hero of epic proportions. In riveting descriptions, Reston captures the fascinating clash of the two armies as they battled their way to the outskirts of Jerusalem.
