Hardwiring Excellence: Purpose, Worthwhile Work, Making a Difference Quint Studer A "textbook with passion", Hardwiring Excellence offers a road map and practical how-to guide for creating and sustaining a culture of service and operational excellence. In this book, author Quint Studer, CEO of Studer Group, draws on his personal experience as a former hospital executive who led two organizations to the top 1% in patient satisfaction and his experience coaching hundreds of healthcare organizations since. Studer, a nationally acclaimed educator, coach, and thought leader in healthcare today, is a master storyteller, mixing "chicken soup style" stories with personal insight, simple tools, and in-depth recommendations on how good organizations can become great ones. Based on Studer Group’s Nine Principles SM, Quint Studer shows how to retain more employees; ensure better customer service; build strong leadership, align organizational values, goals, and results; increase communication; reward and recognize individual success while also requiring accountability; and move operational performance for better financials, market share, and growth. At the core of the journey, he says, is a sense of purpose, worthwhile work and making a difference. When organizations learn how to harness this passion in their employees, they create a success spiral with ever increasing momentum. In fact, Richard L. Clarke, FHFMA, President and CEO of Healthcare Financial Management Association says, "Quint Studer’s Nine Principles of service and operational excellence provide the missing link between people power and strong financials. It’s about courageous leadership." |

Overdiagnosed H. Gilbert Welch, Lisa Schwartzl, Steve Woloshin From a nationally recognized expert, an exposé of the worst excesses of our zeal for medical testing
Going against the conventional wisdom reinforced by the medical establishment and Big Pharma that more screening is the best preventative medicine, Dr. Gilbert Welch builds a compelling counterargument that what we need are fewer, not more, diagnoses. Documenting the excesses of American medical practice that labels far too many of us as sick, Welch examines the social, ethical, and economic ramifications of a health-care system that unnecessarily diagnoses and treats patients, most of whom will not benefit from treatment, might be harmed by it, and would arguably be better off without screening.
Drawing on twenty-five years of medical practice and research on the effects of medical testing, Welch explains in a straightforward, jargon-free style how the cutoffs for treating a person with "abnormal" test results have been drastically lowered just when technological advances have allowed us to see more and more "abnormalities," many of which will pose fewer health complications than the procedures that ostensibly cure them. Citing studies that show that 10 percent of two thousand healthy people were found to have had silent strokes, and that well over half of men over age sixty have traces of prostate cancer but no impairment, Welch reveals overdiagnosis to be rampant for numerous conditions and diseases, including diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, gallstones, abdominal aortic aneuryisms, blood clots, as well as skin, prostate, breast, and lung cancers.
With genetic and prenatal screening now common, patients are being diagnosed not with disease but with "pre-disease" or for being at "high risk" of developing disease. Revealing the economic and medical forces that contribute to overdiagnosis, Welch makes a reasoned call for change that would save us from countless unneeded surgeries, excessive worry, and exorbitant costs, all while maintaining a balanced view of both the potential benefits and harms of diagnosis. Drawing on data, clinical studies, and anecdotes from his own practice, Welch builds a solid, accessible case against the belief that more screening always improves health care. |

Introduction to Radiologic Sciences and Patient Care, 3e Arlene M. Adler MEd RT(R) FAEIRS, Richard R. Carlton MS RT(R)(CV) FAEIRS This text introduces students to the imaging sciences and familiarizes them with patient care skills necessary for clinical practice. The content covered in the new 3rd edition meets the standards set by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Curriculum Guide and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Task List for certification examinations. It helps students prepare not only for certification, but also for professional practice.
Instructor resources are available to qualified adopters; contact your sales representative for more information. Over 300 photos and line drawings clearly demonstrate patient care procedures. Chapter Objectives list concepts students should have mastered by the end of the chapter, to emphasize important points and help students focus. Key terms with definitions are presented at the beginning of each chapter as an introduction to new terms that students will encounter as they read the chapter. Numerous, up-to-date references at the close of each chapter direct the student to additional resources for further research. Appendices provide practice standards, professional organizations, state licensing agencies, the AART code of ethics, and patient's rights information, giving students additional professional information that prepares them for what they will encounter in practice. Comprehensive coverage of relevant topics provides a clear, concise, "big-picture" overview of the radiologic science professions and all aspects of patient care. The new title, formerly Introduction to Radiography and Patient Care, reflects the expanded content and terminology changes relevant to patient care in radiography as well as other imaging modalities such as sonography, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine. New larger trim size allows illustrations to appear closer to discussions, and the use of glare-free gloss paper maintains the high quality of radiographic image reproduction without the glare. A new design with the use of a second color throughout improves the clarity of line drawings and enlivens the presentation of material. A Study Guide section featuring tear-out lab worksheets and review questions for each chapter is included in the back of the book to help students learn and remember the material. |

Your Medical Mind: How to Decide What Is Right for You Jerome Groopman MD, Pamela Hartzband MD The essential tools for making our own best medical decisions, cutting through the confusion caused by the health-care system, the media, and gaps in our own reasoning. Making the right medical choices is harder than ever. Whether we're deciding to take a cholesterol drug or choosing a cancer treatment, we are overwhelmed by information from all sides: our doctors' recommendations, dissenting expert opinions, confusing statistics, conflicting media reports, the advice of friends, claims on the Internet, and a never-ending stream of drug company ads. Your Medical Mind shows us how to chart a clear path through this sea of confusion. Drs. Groopman and Hartzband reveal that each of us has a set of deeply rooted beliefs whose profound influence we may not realize when we make medical decisions. How much trust we place in authority figures, in statistics, or in other patients' stories, in science and technology or in natural healing, and whether we seek the most or the least treatment-all are key factors that shape our choices. Recognizing our preferences and the external factors that might lead our thinking astray can make a dramatic, even lifesaving, difference in our medical decision making. When conflicting information pulls us back and forth between options, when we feel pressured by doctors or loved ones to make a particular choice, or when we have no previous experience to guide us through a crisis, Your Medical Mind will prove an essential companion. The authors interviewed scores of patients who have struggled with situations such as these. They also drew on research and insights from doctors, psychologists, economists, and other experts to help reveal the array of forces that can aid or impede our thinking. They show us the subtle strategies drug advertisers use to influence our choices: they unveil the extreme-sometimes dangerously misleading-power of both narratives and statistics. And they help us understand how to improve upon a universal human shortcoming- assessing the future impact of the decisions we make now. Jerome Groopman, a New Yorker writer and bestselling author, is an oncologist who guides his patients through life-or-death decisions. Pamela Hartzband is a noted endocrinologist and educator at Harvard Medical School who helps patients make critical decisions about their long-term health. As patients, the authors have very different preferences, yet they are united when conveying the book's groundbreaking message: we can cut through the confusion and arrive at decisions that serve us best. |
