Small Animal Gastroenterology Jorg Steiner Great advances have been made recently in small animal gastroenterology. This book has been written by authors from around the world with a variety of backgrounds using evidence-based medicine. The book has two main sections and the first covers the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders. This section contains chapters on various different diagnostic methods and on the most commonly observed clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease presented in dogs and cats, acute gastrointestinal signs, chronic vomiting, chronic diarrhea, and weight loss. The second section of the book focuses on specific diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Each component of the GI tract is discussed separately with another section focusing on diseases that affect more than one organ of the gastrointestinal tract. The book is well referenced and fully illustrated throughout. It is concise but detailed enough for both veterinarians in training and in practice. |

Intestinal Spirochaetes in Domestic Animals and Humans D J Hampson Spirochaete bacteria are commonly found in the gastro-intestinal tracts of animals. A number of intestinal spirochaete species are now recognized as a cause of disease in a variety of animal species, including pigs, poultry and humans. This book is the first to review the literature on these important bacteria and the diseases they cause. It brings together the available information from different disciplines, and on different animal host species, and provides an overview of current understanding in the area.
A major purpose is to summarize and clarify what is known, and to identify what needs further study in this emerging field. By doing this the book streamlines, stimulates and improves the effectiveness of collaborative research on these bacteria and associated diseases. Written by leading authorities from North America, Europe and Australia, the book is aimed at research workers, advanced students and clinicians in general, medical and veterinary microbiology. |

BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology (BSAVA British Small Animal Veterinary Association) Building on the success of the previous edition, the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology, 2nd edition incorporates not only the new information available since the original publication but also additional chapters on diagnostic techniques and presenting complaints.
Part 1 considers diagnostic techniques, with chapters on the approach to a gastrointestinal case, laboratory evaluation, imaging, endoscopy, immunology and biopsy. The completely new chapter on imaging of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas covers in detail the modalities most frequently employed in small animal practice, namely radiography and ultrasonography, whilst also briefly discussing more advanced techniques of Doppler and harmonic ultrasonography, scintigraphy, CR and MRI.
The short chapters in Part 2 provide a practical approach to investigating presenting complaints: dysphagia and regurgitation; vomiting; acute and chronic diarrhoea; malabsorption; GI haemorrhage; dyschezia and tenesmus; jaundice; hepatic encephalopathy and infectious diseases. All follow the same basic format: outlining the clinical features, ranking the differential diagnoses in order of importance, and providing step-by-step algorithms for diagnosis.
The more traditional organ-based systems approach in Part 3 has been expanded from the previous edition to include chapters on disorders of the oral cavity, perineum and anus, and biliary system. Each chapter is presented in a similar style, starting with a brief description of relevant anatomy and physiology, then detailing diagnostic tests, and concluding with a discussion of the disorders that can be encountered, including their treatment.
The completely new final part contains chapters devoted to critical care, assisted feeding techniques, and an overview of therapeutics.
The chapters, written by a host of international authors, all experts in their field, are accompanied throughout by full colour illustrations. |
