Endurance : Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

Alfred Lansing

Mai Tai Butterfly

JoAnn Bassett

Slicing open the afternoon mail rips apart Nola Stevens’ secure—but tedious—life in Seattle. Twenty-three years ago, she moved from her father’s house to her husband’s house, barely pausing to attend her high school graduation. But now her marriage is over. Her ex-husband’s moved on to something else entirely, leaving Nola parked on her friend Malia’s sofa bed until further notice. When Malia’s summoned home to Maui for her father’s seventy-fifth birthday luau, she persuades Nola to come along. Hawaii astounds her—non-stop sunshine, aloha spirit, and fresh fruit cheaper than canned. And then there’s the half-naked sculptor who keeps sneaking up behind her.

“Mai Tai Butterfly” is a three-fold love story: a love of place, of a man, and the love that makes the other two possible.

Living aloha is the best revenge

Down Under

Bill Bryson

After tales from the USA and Britain, Bill Bryson turns his roving eye to Australia, the only island that is also a continent and the only continent that is also a country. It is the driest, flattest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents. It has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way that anywhere else. Yet when Bill Bryson travelled to Australia he promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, the cities safe and clean, the food is excellent, the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. He tries to find out why Aussies are so cool, digging up a past that reveals convicts, explorers, gold diggers and outlaws.

=== Day 2 Sample ===

This is a sample of the itinerary. The actual itinerary includes additional pictures.
----------------------------------------------

Start your second day with a stroll down to Darling Harbour.

If you’re in Kings Cross, first catch a train to Town Hall. If you’re in Central you can cut down on walking time by taking the train to Town Hall, or you can get there by walking straight up George Street.

Just outside Town Hall’s George Street exit, you’ll see the intersection of George, Druitt and Park Streets. This is Sydney CBD’s busiest intersection. The major landmark here is the Queen Victoria Building, with the statue of Queen Victoria out the front. Turn left on Druitt Street and follow it to the overhead bridge and down the steps to Darling Harbour.

10:00am – 12:30pm Sydney Aquarium
If you’re up early you might like to check out the very serene Chinese Garden of Friendship which, from the foot of the stairs is a short walk to your left through the park and playground.

Otherwise, turn right at the bottom of the stairs and walk along the harbour to Sydney Aquarium. Entry to Sydney Aquarium is normally $35, so your best bet is to get the Explore4 Pass for $50. This will also give you one entry each to Sydney Wildlife World, Sydney Tower and OceanWorld Manly and is valid for 3 months.

New Tales of the South Pacific - Paradise NOT

Graeme Kennedy

A beautifully written collection of tales with legends and locals, fiction hilarious and tragic, but always thought-provoking to depict the reality of South Pacific island life.

Beginning with an historic overview of Polynesia, a former NZ newspaperman brings a completely different point of view. New Tales of the South Pacific ranges from pristine lagoons to sleazy bars with a collection of characters to match, challenging readers’ perception of vast region many think of as Paradise.

Volume 2 is scheduled for release in Q3 2011.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific

J. Maarten Troost

At the age of twenty-six, Maarten Troost—who had been pushing the snooze button on the alarm clock of life by racking up useless graduate degrees and muddling through a series of temp jobs—decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to Tarawa, a remote South Pacific island in the Republic of Kiribati. He was restless and lacked direction, and the idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. He should have known better.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals tells the hilarious story of what happens when Troost discovers that Tarawa is not the island paradise he dreamed of. Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles through relentless, stifling heat, a variety of deadly bacteria, polluted seas, toxic fish—all in a country where the only music to be heard for miles around is “La Macarena.” He and his stalwart girlfriend Sylvia spend the next two years battling incompetent government officials, alarmingly large critters, erratic electricity, and a paucity of food options (including the Great Beer Crisis); and contending with a bizarre cast of local characters, including “Half-Dead Fred” and the self-proclaimed Poet Laureate of Tarawa (a British drunkard who’s never written a poem in his life).

With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost has delivered one of the most original, rip-roaringly funny travelogues in years—one that will leave you thankful for staples of American civilization such as coffee, regular showers, and tabloid news, and that will provide the ultimate vicarious adventure.
